Canadian Health Care System "Unsustainable"
The Conference Board of Canada announced in a report that the Canadian health care system is "unsustainable."
Glen Roberts, Director of Health Programs for the Board, says the Canadian health system "now consumes 32% of provincial and territorial revenues. That share will rise to 44% in 2020, even before the demographic wave of boomers begins to wash onto the shore of the health care system. This funding crunch also does not account for emerging factors, such as addressing wait times for care and patient safety, that could further escalate costs."
Inshoring Jobs
There has been a lot of talk about offshoring US jobs, but we tend to ignore the 'in-shoring' of them as well. This is the other side of global trade.
US subsidiaries of foreign companies employ 6.4 million Americans. They also account for 22% of US exports. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the US increased in 2003 by $82 billion, expected to lead to creation of 400,000 new jobs.
Some key employers include Honda (24,000 US employees), Toyota (35,000 US employees), Nestle (43,000 US employees) and Siemens (65,000 US employees).
NPR's Morning Edition recently had a segment discussing insourcing.
